while i agree with the main post i wanted to add something else that works for me. i have a cable modem that i switch back and forth between a wireless router and direct connection to my ps3. when i want to direct connect to my ps3 i set it up this way: wired connection, custom, auto-detect device settings, auto-detect IP address bla bla bla.
